40 years ago today - Rumble in the Jungle
|
An aging and slowing Muhammad Ali faced the most feared man the heavyweight division had ever seen, a man who had utterly destroyed the only two men to have defeated Ali, Joe Frazier and Ken Norton.
No one gave Ali a snowball's chance in hell of winning, some even feared for his very life....
“Everybody stop talking now, attention! I told you, all of my critics, when I beat Sonny Liston that I was the greatest of all times. I told you today, I am still the greatest of all times. Never again defeat me, never again say that I am going to be defeated, never again make me the underdog until I’m about 50 years old, then you might get me.”

I watched this fight on You tube a few weeks ago and although they call it the Rope-a-Dope tactic, Ali did box him, he was bang on the money though regarding Foreman's punching. What cannot be disputed though is Ali could take some punishment in a ring. And still win.

Fantastic piece from Colin Hart in the Sun yesterday... still probably say it is the greatest sporting event that has ever happened.... bit hard for the yooth' of today to realise but the world literally did stop when he fought...
Watching BT Sport last night at one of the college games and Ali was there cheering on Louisville (v Florida State)... he looked pretty well

It's a fact that foreman and his team were praying for Ali' s life in the dressing room before the fight.
What followed is proof that he indeed the greatest.

Ted I know what you mean it was the same for me with my dad. Boxing was his sport. My early mornings started with Don Cockle v Rocky Marciano 3am in mum and dads bed listening to crackling radio. Graduated to Ali on TV later on

Johnny Wakelin just rang in on Talk Sports. Still in good voice. His record company (Pye) said they would only release his record if Ali beat Foreman. I bet he jumped out of his chair!

The first Frazier fight was his 3rd fight after suspension (also, he didn't go to prison on appeal) not his first.
And he wasn't KOed, Frazier won by UD. He was knocked DOWN though, from a trademark Frazier leaping left hook.
He was only KOed once, in that fight against Holmes which should never have taken place.
Should've retired after Thriller in Manilla and DEFINITELY should've retired after Norton III or Shavers.

Always thought it strange how he was deemed washed up at 32. Surely because of the way he fought - he had been in very few real slug fests and given a 2 couple of years in jail he should have been as fresh as a daisy anyway. This was not his first fight since out - that was when he was knocked out by Frazier. Also the fight was delayed so they both had spent ages in Africa at training camps. Maybe more a quirk of history that at the time 32 was deemed past your best in boxing whereas now you are probably at your peak. Then again 6 years later at 38, (my age now) he was slurring his words. There was a good BBC documnetary on him about 10 years ago and he he speaking just before the Larry Holmes bout and sounded like a drunk when he spoke. We all know what happened next.

He was older than 32 in a way though because of the years he lost due to the suspension.
